Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA)
~ Letter to all Parents of Grade 4 Students from:
The Board of Education of
School District No. 34 (Abbotsford)
January 16, 2012
Dear Parents and Guardians of
Grade 4 and 7 Students:
Re:Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA)
The Ministry of Education
requires that school districts throughout BC administer the Foundation Skills
Assessment (FSA) to students in Grades 4 and 7 each year. The assessment
measures student competency in the areas of Reading, Writing and Numeracy
(Math).In the Abbotsford School
District the tests are scheduled to be completed between January 16th and
February 24th. Each test has an online as well as a
paper and pencil component.The
three tests take about 90 minutes each to complete.
Schools and districts use the
results of this assessment to monitor the effectiveness of their programs and
to make decisions about how and where to allocate instructional resources. The
individual results are also shared with parents to inform them of their child’s
progress.
The British Columbia
Teachers’ Federation continues to take issue with the administration of these
tests.You may receive separate
communication from them or the local Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association
about the tests.
Nonetheless, the School Act clearly outlines the
expectation that Boards of Education must conduct this assessment and the
requirement for districts to assess the work of their students. Therefore, the
tests will be administered to all Grade 4 and 7 students in the Abbotsford
School District.Please note that
students will be excused from writing the tests only
under the conditions specified in the Ministry of Education policy. That is, if they have a Ministry of
Education Individual Education Plan (IEP) which documents a disability that
significantly impacts their performance in reading, writing or numeracy.Your child’s principal will inform you
if your child has been exempted.
To assist students in becoming
familiar with the online portion of the assessment, the Ministry has established
a practice site where sample questions may be accessed at https://www.awinfosys.com/eassessment/fsa.htm.
This site will be accessible until January 27,
2012.
